Paid Summer Apprenticeship – Job Description
Work your way up in the construction trade with hands-on experience from JMJ Residential Construction in Ann Arbor, MI. Work hard, forge friendships, and become part of a faith-filled construction team—all while setting the foundation for a life-long career. Upon satisfactory completion of at least two consecutive summer (paid) apprenticeships, apprentices may apply for an assistant carpenter role at JMJ at an enhanced pay grade.
SUMMER 1:
- Construction basics and strength-building
- Lumber and stone loading/unloading; demolition; digging and other labor
- Job site setup, cleanup and organization
SUMMER 2:
- Continue with all the above tasks while beginning to assist the lead carpenter
- Start learning construction skills, along with tools maintenance, setup, safety and use
SUMMER 3:
During the third summer, you will gain proficiency in all tools, and be ready to transition into an assistant carpenter role, at a higher-than-entry pay rate.
Minimum Requirements:
- Desire to work in a Catholic team environment and to learn the construction trade
- Hardworking, on time and dependable
- Physically able to load/unload tools from truck, carry lumber and concrete, stand or kneel for long periods of time, and perform other physically demanding tasks
- A valid driver’s license and car
- Able to perform basic math calculations (read a tape measure, etc.)
- Bring basic tools. List provided upon application.
- Construction and carpentry experience a plus, but not required
What we offer:
- Consistent work in Ann Arbor, MI throughout the summer. Pay commensurate with experience.
- Hands-on training from experienced carpenters in the key aspects of our trade
- Work 8:00am – 4:30pm M-F (Catholic Holy Days of Obligation and federal holidays off)
- We will consider rewards for successful completion of summer construction classes at Eastern Michigan University or Washtenaw Community College on a case-by-case basis.
